Overview

Heading south from the main island of Viti Levu is the island of Beqa (pronounced Benga) which has gained worldwide recognition for its famous baited shark dive. Beqa lagoon draws in scuba divers from all over the world in search of an encounter with some of the ocean’s most fascinating predators. Diving holidays in Beqa Lagoon are therefore extremely popular for those looking for adrenaline-filled dives and it is regularly coined as one of the best dive sites in Fiji.

In Depth

Up to eight species of shark can be seen on a single shark dive on the famous site Cathedral (including tiger sharks, bull sharks, lemon sharks, tawny nurse sharks, grey/white/black tip reef sharks) and experienced shark handlers chum the waters and feed the sharks who have become accustomed to this source of food. There is a debate as to whether sharks should be fed at all from an ethical standpoint, with critics citing the argument that this encourages behavioural changes and unnatural interactions between humans and sharks. Advocates for feeding shine a spotlight on the benefits of creating an alternative narrative around sharks as a valuable part of tourism and a species worth protecting, particularly in light of the booming illegal shark fin trade. This has led to a catastrophic depletion of shark numbers worldwide. At Reefscape Travel we only support scuba diving operators we believe are carrying out the shark dives in a respectful and sustainable fashion.

Shark dive aside, the best dive sites around Beqa Island offer an impressive array of topographically interesting sites including pinnacles, walls and swim-throughs. Whilst Beqa is far from a one-trick pony, the main draw is undoubtedly the sharks, as much of the reef around this area has suffered cyclone damage. Soft corals can be seen in this region though not in the same carpeted abundance as Taveuni or Bligh Water. Schooling fish, reef sharks, turtles, octopi and usual reef inhabitants can all be seen at local sites. The waters are generally cooler and the weather a little more turbulent south of Viti Levu so scuba divers should be prepared accordingly.
