Overview

The deep channel between Viti Levu and Vanua Levu is named Bligh Water, and the seamounts located here are home to Fiji’s best soft coral sites. This area of Fiji is undoubtedly home to some of Fiji’s best dive sites, in particular in the Vatu-i-Ra passage where the strong currents open up soft corals to feed on the fresh delivery of nutrients, and large pelagic species can be seen hanging out in the blue. Only a handful of resorts can reach the sites in the area so we recommend experiencing Bligh Water by liveaboard.

In Depth

The majesty of dive sites such as E6, Mount Mutiny and Mellow Yellow have to be placed among the best dives in the world when it comes to coral health. Swim-throughs, caverns and passages are draped in soft corals and sea fans in every colour, whilst pristine hard coal gardens showcase an immensely impressive variety of coral species. Given the effects of coral bleaching, pollution and cyclone damage on global coral reefs, the beauty of these reefs is enough to bring tears to a diver’s eyes! Huge clouds of bright orange and purple anthias erupt from the reefs, and fish life is abundant both large and small. Between July and September, humpback whales migrate south through these waters and can be heard on dives, seen at the surface and if you are incredibly lucky they may be spotted during a dive, or receptive to you joining them on a snorkel – though it is firmly the whales’ decision as to whether they will let you do this! Pilot whales and dolphins are also frequently encountered on the surface.

Wakaya Island is a little further south from the Bligh Water seamounts, and is one of the best areas in Fiji to see reef manta rays. These gentle filter-feeders frequent cleaning stations near Wakaya Island during the manta season. This is also a great area in which to see big fish life in general, including great hammerheads, scalloped hammerheads, grey reef sharks, white tip reef sharks, tunas, barracuda, jacks and Spanish mackerel.
