Overview

Kadavu (pronounced can-dah-voo) is so off the beaten track that even many Fijians have never visited! This southernmost region of Fiji is home to exciting diving, giant filter-feeding manta rays and a very special luxury resort private island for those looking for the ultimate Fijian escape. It is also the location of the fourth largest barrier reef in the world, called the Great Astrolabe Reef, home to the best dive sites in the region.

In Depth

Diving holidays in Kadavu are so exciting because just about anything can turn up! There is a healthy population of manta rays who feed and clean in the area year-round, with the best time to see them also coinciding with the best visibility which can reach 30m+. The two main reefs in this area are the Great Astrolabe Reef and nearby Solo Reef. Cyclone Winston damaged the fragile reefs and islands of Kadavu but the coral recovery is really impressive and the wealth of nutrients channeling through these waters also helps to sustain the soft corals, though they aren’t as numerous here as in Bligh Water or the Somosomo Strait (Taveuni). The bathymetry of this area is also interesting with pinnacles, walls and plenty of swim-throughs to be enjoyed. Large coral heads serve as cleaning stations for the resident population of mantas, and rise up shallow enough to snorkel with these gentle giants. From June-August humpback whales pass through the deep water here on their way to Tonga and can be heard on dives and sometimes seen at the surface if you are lucky!
