Overview

Namena Marine Reserve is among the most famous diving areas in Fiji, with many of the best dive sites in the country to be found here. Located off the coast from Savusavu, this is the oldest marine protected area in Fiji (since 1997) and the thriving reefs are a testament to these conservation efforts. Namena can be accessed from Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort on a day trip, or during a liveaboard trip onboard NAI’A.

In Depth

Much of the diving here (as with many areas of Fiji) is best for experienced divers who are comfortable diving in currents, which bring in the pelagic species and open up the soft corals so that they can feed on the nutrients brought in by the incoming current. Seamounts rise up from the depths and are visited by schools of grey reef sharks, cruising white tip reef sharks, eagle rays, tornadoes of barracuda, shimmering schools of jacks and deep below, hammerheads sharks. A series of twin pinnacles can be found in this area that are covered in soft and hard corals. Macro life is abundant too with a kaleidoscope of brightly-coloured nudibranchs, tiny pipefish, perfectly-camouflaged scorpionfish, leaf fish, cleaner shrimps and even pygmy seahorses clinging to hydroids on the ocean floor. A good dive guide is essential to make the most of the impressive macro life found on the sites around Namena.
