Overview

For many island nations, getting away from the most populous areas usually rewards scuba divers with more pristine conditions, and Taveuni is no exception to this rule. Known as the Garden Island, Fiji’s verdant island of Taveuni is a must-visit for any diving holiday to Fiji. Its rich surrounding waters are host to some of the best dive sites in Fiji with the Somosome Strait being one of the most coveted after scuba diving spots.

In Depth

Life flourishes above and below the waves in Taveuni and the stunning reefs of the Somosomo Strait have become some of the most famous in all of Fiji for divers. Within the Strait on the famous Rainbow Reef, some of the best dive sites include The Great White Wall or Rainbow Passage which justify Fiji’s nickname as the Soft Coral Capital of the World. Vast walls are swathed with swaying soft corals in oranges, pinks, reds, whites, yellows – a full spectrum of colours peppered with a dusting of brightly-coloured anthias in vibrant purple and orange. This is where many of the iconic Fijian diving photos are captured and the diving does not disappoint!

Whilst the main focus in this area is on the soft corals and schooling fish, there is also a plethora of fascinating macro life to be enjoyed should scuba divers have the right guide to point the critters out. Hairy ghost pipefish, blue ribbon eels, scorpionfish, leaf fish, exotic and varied nudibranchs and a selection of small cephalopods await for those with an eagle eye and a macro lens handy.
