Atmosphere Resort & Spa
"A day trip to nearby Apo Island is must; home to a staggering 450 species of coral and 300 species of fish" - India, Reefscape Travel Director
Overview
Atmosphere Resort and Spa, located in Dauin, one of the best places on Earth for muck-diving, is a firm favourite at Reefscape Travel. The house reef alone allows divers to get up close to some of the most weird and wonderful critters on the planet, and there are a plethora of exciting sites within easy reach of this beautiful resort. Diving is at the heart of the resort (quite literally!) and this permeates throughout, making for an unforgettable diving and snorkelling experience for guests. Atmosphere is very much a family-friendly resort and all guests are made to feel incredibly welcome.
In Depth
The layout of the resort means that the 44 rooms a spread across a large footprint of well manicured gardens, creating a tranquil haven for guests. Atmosphere is an ocean view property, so while no rooms have direct access to the black sand beach, there are excellent views out towards the ocean from the communal areas.
The rooms are decorated with bold dashes of colours overlaying a peaceful palette of white and natural tones. Open air bathrooms provide plenty of space and a luxury finish. The Premium Pool Suites are particularly impressive. Although the Philippines is not necessarily a destination for foodies, the food at Atmosphere is an exception to this rule, with a broad range of delicious dishes available at the resort’s 2 restaurants.
Dining open-air is always a treat in these tropical climes. For a special occasion, a table can be set up in the treehouse. The resort is family-friendly with plenty of facilities for children including a kids club, kids pool and babysitting services.
The Diving
With up to 5 dives per day, certified divers can spend hours underwater with expert guides to showcase the fascinating critters in this region. The PADI 5* dive centre is the focal point in the resort and groups are sorted by ability into small ratios of 4 divers to 1 divemaster.
Photographers will be thrilled with the generous facilities and photography courses can be arranged, along with a full complement of PADI courses. Guests can even enjoy a speciality PADI Frogfish course which was created at Atmosphere. Service is of the highest level with all equipment looked after by the team, and nitrox is available for certified divers.
The house reef is excellent for snorkellers and shallow dives, with night dives being especially rewarding. Diving at sites further afield are operated from one of the resort’s three large comfortable boats – bangkas and speedboats. Fluffy towels, water, teas and coffees and snacks are loaded onto the boats for divers to enjoy in their surface intervals.
Day trips to nearby Apo Island run daily at the resort. The team is made up of the dive centre manager and more than 10 multilingual PADI instructors. All of them are extremely conscientious and personable guides who will help find the rarest creatures in the area.
Beyond the Reef
When guests aren’t diving we recommend a trip to the award-winning Sanctuary spa which is a series of open air spa pavilions set in a tranquil tropical garden. Guests seeking more of a thrill can join a mountain biking excursion, ATV tour or head out ziplining. Dolphin-watching can be arranged by the resort as well as boat trips to nearby islands.
Kayaking on Balanan Lake is a peaceful experience and guests can dip in for a refreshing swim in the cool fresh water, or head out to Casaroro waterfalls to swim in the deep plunge pool. For those wishing to contribute to the community, we’d recommend joining a trip to Atmosphere’s soup kitchen who are doing great work to help provide local children with balanced meals.
Please note that although whale shark snorkelling trips are offered in Oslob, we do not advocate this because of the overcrowded conditions and poor treatment of the whale sharks.
