20 thatched villas, sporadically nestled in dense foliage along the fringes of a white sand beach make up Azura Benguerra. Best accessed by helicopter, this is a secluded island escape with some of the most jaw-dropping views imagineable with the undulating dunes and turquoise waters of the area. Benguerra Island is located in a marine protected area, and the marine life has had the chance to thrive making this an excellent spot for divers looking for a spot of good old fashioned luxury.

The rooms are tastefully decorated in muted beachy tones and with generous indoor and outdoor bathrooms and foliage thoughtfully landscaped to allow maximum privacy. Ideal for honeymooners, families and anybody who likes a mix of luxury and a laidback feel, Azura Benguerra is something special. The resort has a sociable feel for those looking to meet like-minded travellers, with a great bar at the centre of the main area, as well as the Peri Peri beach club a short walk down the powder beach. The tides do mean that swimming from the beach isn’t always an option, but private pools look after this for guests needing to cool off from the African sun.
The Diving
The onsite PADI 5 Star centre is run by a team of divemasters and instructors who can assist with taking the very first steps to get certified or show experienced divers the best dive sites in the area. The diving takes place at Two Mile and Five Mile Reef which are a short boat journey from the island. Two-tank mornings and single dives can be arranged, with surface intervals spent on a deserted spit of sand with an extravagant packed lunch for something really special. With a more limited selection of sites on offer, this is best for leisure divers looking to enjoy a few dives as part of their holiday.
Beyond the Reef
A stay at Azura Benguerra can be as relaxed as guests wish, or include a range of activities from relaxed water sports to awe-inspiring heli flips or private picnics on undulating sand dunes. A signature Azure sunset dhow cruise is a beautiful way to enjoy the evening, and dinner setups along the beach are particularly special. Horse-riding is very popular on Benguerra Island, with a fascinating history of the rescued horses that reside on the island and can be taken out for a swim in the shallows. Island-hopping trips offer unforgettable scenery and the snorkelling at Two Mile Reef means that non-divers can experience the underwater world too. At the right time of year, migrating humpback whales can be seen in the waters around Benguerra, and dugongs are becoming more and more frequently spotted.
