Overview
Located a short drive from Savusavu airport, and just a boat ride away from Namena Marine Reserve, Jean-Michel Cousteau resort is the ideal family-friendly resort for a diving holiday in Fiji. With no televisions or phones in the rooms, this is a chance to switch off and get stuck into Fijian life. Couples will also find plenty to do and can make use of the adults-only areas as well as the excellent on-site dive centre and a wide array of daily excursions and activities. The vibe is relaxed and friendly, with the resort team doing all they can to make sure guests have the best possible stay. The added bonus of access to Namena Marine Reserve as well as some excellent local sites make this a brilliant spot for divers looking for a relaxed schedule and luxury accommodation.
In Depth
The resort is made up of 25 traditional Fjiian one and two-bedroom bures (bungalows) set amongst tropical gardens or facing out to the ocean. Despite nods to traditional Fijian design, the bures have a contemporary feel with generous bathrooms, a large open bedroom with a separate day bed and a private deck. For families, the two-bedroom bures have different setups to suit your preference whether you’d like to all be in the same space or have the children sleep in a separate bedroom with their own bathroom. Those looking for a quieter spot should pick the oceanfront rooms which also offer beautiful sunset views.
Dining takes place in the large twin restaurant areas, either under cover or al fresco, one for families and one for adults only. The food is excellent here and the executive chef uses local and sustainable ingredients, many of which are sourced from the resort’s organic garden, to create daily changing menus. Private dining can be arranged on beachside decks or on the long house reef jetty.
The Diving
At the heart of the resort is the PADI Five Star Dive Centre, Laventure, operating daily dive boats morning and afternoon to local sites and the best dive sites at Namena Marine Reserve for more experienced divers. Nitrox is offered (and recommended) for certified divers. The resort pool is an ideal spot for new divers to take their first breaths underwater before heading into open ocean, and the centre offers a full complement of PADI diving courses. The steel dive boats are large and spacious, each with a toilet on board and plenty of space to gear up before a giant stride entry into the water. The guides are experienced and enthusiastic, and safety briefings are thorough. Divers are grouped by experience and certification level.
Beyond the Reef
Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort has so much more to offer than the diving alone, with daily excursions planned on the board for those who want to get out and explore Fiji. Rainforest and waterfall tours, visits to the local pearl farm, river kayaking, chocolate factory tours and catamaran trips to deserted sand cays can all be arranged on a shared or private basis by the resort. From the resort, the team are always ready to gear up a hobie cat or provide kayaks or stnd up paddleboards so that guests can get out onto the water and enjoy some complimentary water sports. The in-house marine biologists lead snorkelling trips and mangrove walks, also overseeing the resort’s sustainability initiatives. For kids, there is a detailed daily changing schedule at the Bula Kids Club, and nanny services are included at no extra cost for little ones. The beautiful resort spa is the perfect spot to unwind after an activity-packed day.
