Galapagos Sky
"The best dive sites in Galapagos are accessible only by liveaboard, and Sky is the best operating in the area" - Louisa, Reefscape Travel Director
Overview
The Galapagos Sky has been in continuous operation in the Galapagos Islands since 2001 and is the archipelago’s premier scuba diving liveaboard, offering a first-class experience both above and below the waves. Expert, naturalist dive guides ensure that divers get the most out of this bucket list diving trip and the friendly, professional crew make sure that every need is taken care of whilst onboard. Comfort, expertise and experience is what makes this a slick operation and one of our favourite liveaboards of anywhere on the planet.
In Depth
M/V Galapagos Sky is custom-built for diving in the Galapagos, 33m in length and steel-hulled to combat the elements. There are just eight en-suite cabins with the option for twin Deluxe Cabins on the lower deck or Master Cabins with King or twin beds, located on the Upper Deck with large windows. All the cabins are well appointed with showers, mirrored cabinet, wardrobe, bathrobes, hairdryer and marine safe (biodegradable) toiletries. The vessel offers plenty when not in the cabins including a spacious lounge area elegantly furnished with wooden pannelling, separate dining area, outdoor lounging including the large sundeck with awning for shade, a boutique and bar.
The chefs onboard provide delicious and plentiful International and Ecuadorian cuisine and are well versed in the needs of hungry divers with plenty of snacks and three meals a day. There is also the option to have a hot drink delivered to the cabin to start a day of world-class diving in style!
The Diving
When it comes to diving, the operation onboard M/V Galapagos Sky is second to none including stringent safety policies as is necessary for the advanced level of diving including all divers being provided with a Nautilus Lifeline. The liveaboard cruises to Wolf and Darwin on every trip, so the expert naturalist guides know their stuff and will pick the right time for the dive sites depending on the conditions with two to four dives a day depending on the location. Three days are spent at Wolf and Darwin, arguably some of the best diving in the world.
All dives begin from the spacious dive deck, equipped with camera tables and gear lockers. Once geared up, divers will board the tenders to get to the dive sites. Currents are strong in the Galapagos, so a negative entry is often needed, and a nitrox certificate is required with free nitrox offered onboard. It is not all about safety onboard the Sky: the crew hand out warm towels to divers as they arrive back and the dive deck is equipped with hot showers, meaning even in the chillier spots guests can keep themselves comfortable and warm in between dives.
Beyond the Reef
During the weeklong trip, guests will get the opportunity to go on three land excursions in the central islands, walking in the footsteps of Charles Darwin. The first will be a short climb to the top of Bartolome for the incredible panoramic views of Pinnacle rock and lagoons in the distance. Next is a visit to the Galapagos Tortoises in their natural habitat in the highlands of Santa Cruz. Guests can also visit the Charles Darwin Research Centre on Santa Cruz. On the final morning, a visit to the Interpretation Centre in San Cristobal offers the opportunity to learn the history of the Galapagos and the ongoing conservation efforts. Ecoventura, the fleet to which the Galapagos Sky belongs, is recognised as a leader in sustainable tourism and became the first carbon neutral operation in the Galapagos in 2006 amongst many other accolades and ongoing projects.
